I grew up in Baltimore County the youngest of six children and the only girl. My mother, Betty, and I were definitely outnumbered but we LOVED our “boys”, which included my father. She and I were best friends from my birth!
Mom adored us and her 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well. She had an exciting entrepreneurial spirit and enjoyed a successful professional life too! She opened the first exercise salon in Towson in the 1950’s. She was resourceful and energetic and interested in everything! My mother appreciated antique furniture, good rugs, nice jewelry, an elegant table, and a good bottle of wine. Always “put together” (no matter the occasion); her shoes, clothes, and scarves always blended beautifully, not to mention watches – mom loved watches.
We moved to St. Michaels Maryland in 1981 . Not ready to “retire” she opened a small pottery shop that grew over time. She and I owned and operated St. Michaels Pottery Warehouse together for 16 years. She fell in love with St. Michaels, a historic and friendly small town that she called “home” for 34 years, until the day she died at the age of 89.
This is our story, one of aging together and a love that resolutely survived both our heartaches (which haven’t been many – “Thank you God”) and great happiness, too. These are my memories and muses on our life together as she worked her way through her elder years and me through the middle ones; the story of Betty and her Baby Boomer daughter, me, and a story of great admiration and gratitude.
